"Cocktail Chronicles" by Sal Pizarro 01.10.17

Honcho hits the low-key high mark

"Honcho, the bar Rod Newman opened in downtown Los Altos in late 2015, is a great place for people who want a taste of cocktail culture without being overwhelmed by high-proof spirits.

I slipped in there recently with Mrs. Cocktail Chronicles and a couple of friends who had recommended it — and it was a good thing we went with them. You could very easily pass by the store front’s frosted glass windows without noticing — we did until our friends pulled us back. It’s not a huge space inside, and there was quite a buzzy crowd there for a Wednesday night."

“I really enjoy interacting with people,” the Los Altos resident said. “My mother is a lifetime teacher – maybe I got that from her.”

She also bequeathed the bar’s name, taken from her affectionate parental chiding: “Look who’s the head honcho.”
